What is a TENS?

A Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Simulation (TENS) is a method of pain relief, great for use in labour. 

How do they work? 

The TENS machine is operated by the labouring woman. 4 sticky electrode pads are placed on her back and it is connected to a handheld remote. When the woman feels a contraction starting, she can press a button which sends safe, small pulses of electrical current to the pads on her back. 

These pulses create gentle, tingling sensations. The woman has the power to increase or lower the intensity of the pulses to align with the intensity of her contractions.

How does this provide pain relief? 

✨ The pulses from a TENS machine prevent pain signals from reaching the brain

✨ The pulses stimulate a release of endorphins - natures own, feel-good hormone, said to be 20-40 times stronger than morphine!

✨ It helps you feel in control of your labour by having control over your TENS machine with each contraction

✨ It offers a distraction from contractions

TENS are very popular in labour and have no adverse affects on mother or baby. 

How do I hire one? 

After discussion with Sophie to confirm a TENS machine is available for your estimated due period, your payment of $75 will include the rental of the TENS machine and shipping both ways.

You will receive your TENS machine approximately 3 weeks before your estimated due date. Once your baby is born, simply return the unit in the supplied, prepaid satchel it came with.

Why is this important? 

Our subconscious mind is responsible for our beliefs, habits, memories, feelings. We can train our subconscious mind, through repetition (seeing and hearing positive affirmations regularly!), and through self- hypnosis (hypnobirthing), to convince our subconscious mind that we are capable, we can do this, that every surge is positive and bringing us our baby, that we are made for this and in control in our labour.
